The base is plastic,the structural design of the base is more than sufficient; it will not break.This is a heavy piece of lane leather furniture , but  made of quality. It takes a short time to assemble, the most challenging aspect being installation of the arm rests. Assembly is a little easier if you keep all screws loose until every part is in place, then tighten. The parts are heavy, Very sturdy chair tho,and very comfortable. It has an adjustable lumbar, If you do not belong to high weight or very tall category it is a great chair to have. The installation manual is quite straight forward . You can seat for long hours with no issues.It rolls ok on the carpet floor.
